{"id":120,"date":"2015-01-19T15:59:15","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T20:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rumohr.com\/blog\/?p=120"},"modified":"2015-01-19T15:59:15","modified_gmt":"2015-01-19T20:59:15","slug":"the-challenge-of-not-being-distra-oh-look-over-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rumohr.com\/blog\/the-challenge-of-not-being-distra-oh-look-over-there\/","title":{"rendered":"The Challenge of Not Being Distra&#8230;oh, look over there!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many things to distract us from concentrating for long periods of time these days. \u00a0And the problem with many of those things is that they are enjoyable, or at least addictive to some degree. \u00a0Watching TV, checking social media, playing games on your smartphone\u2014one could easily do these for hours. \u00a0But we all also need to get Real Work done.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m on Day 4 of the <a title=\"15 Days to Freedom Blog Challenge\" href=\"https:\/\/contest.io\/c\/pahnxkz2\" target=\"_blank\">15 Days to Freedom Blog Challenge<\/a> by Natalie Sisson of <a title=\"The Suitcase Entrepreneur\" href=\"http:\/\/suitcaseentrepreneur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Suitcase Entrepreneur<\/a>, and my assignment today is to tell you about one distraction I&#8217;m going to remove from my daily life.<\/p>\n<p>Since I already employ several anti-distraction techniques, such as only checking my email at periodic intervals, turning off email notifications, to name a couple, I have to dig a bit deeper for this one. \u00a0And my distraction is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Browser tabs! \u00a0I usually open a Gmail tab, a Facebook tab, a LinkedIn tab, and have those open all the time. \u00a0I also tend to pull up articles that came to me via email, and leave those tabs open until I read the articles. \u00a0While I&#8217;m doing research, I tend to open up websites in new tabs, and leave those open as well. \u00a0I can end up with multitudes of\u00a0tabs open in multiple windows, any of which are able to distract me at any moment if I&#8217;m trying to find an excuse not to do <a href=\"http:\/\/rumohr.com\/blog\/the-challenge-of-doing-what-the-f-im-supposed-to-be-doing\/\">what the f*** I&#8217;m supposed to be doing<\/a>. \u00a0Or, for the procrastinator&#8217;s jackpot, get compulsive and decide that I\u00a0need to take care of all of those tabs right now. \u00a0Of course, <a href=\"http:\/\/atp.fm\/episodes\/96\" target=\"_blank\">some people like to work this way<\/a>, but it&#8217;s not the most productive for me.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, all it&#8217;s going to take to eliminate this distraction is a little willpower, and what my mother taught me: \u00a0it&#8217;s OK to make a mess while working on a project, but put everything away as soon as you&#8217;re done. \u00a0Take care of those pesky tabs. \u00a0Read them if they must be read, or if they need to be saved for later, save them to <a title=\"Pocket\" href=\"http:\/\/getpocket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pocket<\/a> (for reading) or <a href=\"http:\/\/evernote.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Evernote<\/a> (for reference). \u00a0Or create a task to deal with it, and paste the URL into the task (I currently use <a title=\"OmniFocus\" href=\"https:\/\/www.omnigroup.com\/omnifocus\" target=\"_blank\">OmniFocus<\/a>). \u00a0Start the next task with a clean browser slate.<\/p>\n<p>Now if you&#8217;ll excuse me, I have some browser tabs to take care of. \u00a0Unless something distracts me from that.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are so many things to distract us from concentrating for long periods of time these days. \u00a0And the problem with many of those things is that they are enjoyable, or at least addictive to some degree. \u00a0Watching TV, checking social media, playing games on your smartphone\u2014one could easily do these for hours. \u00a0But we [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":122,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"","_et_pb_old_content":"","_et_gb_content_width":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[20],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-120","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-life","et-has-post-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The Challenge of Not Being Distra...oh, look over there!
